For me, it's not about looking for white approval, it's about girls and boys being taken out of their classroom being deprived of equitable access to educational opportunities because of how they look. It's about men and women being deprived employment opportunities because of their hair texture and style. Loving yourself doesn't protect you from racial discrimination. If loving yourself was the key, then things would be a lot easier for Black people across the board. As much as we'd like White people's opinions not to matter, they continue to impact Black people's lives.
