I often find the contradictions in some conservative perspectives astounding. They tend to selectively apply information. In Psychology, we call this "sharpening and leveling." People tend to sharpen data points which strengthen their point and level of or diminish data points which contradict their beliefs.

The goal as informed citizens should be to acknowledge our underlying assumptions and then view the events from that perspective. Blaming the victims of police victims is easier for some people because the alternative would be to challenge their idea that police are inherently righteous.
