Non violence characterizes Gandhi perfectly. However, it's a mischaracterization of Martin Luther King's perspective. This actually harms the movement by encouraging passivity in the face of adversity. King was inspired by Ghandi but not subserviant to his world view. He applied it the best he could to encourage civility. However, he was still beaten and jailed many times.
