We need police officers to be willing to have those conversations. However, as long as they protect the officers who hurt citizens and fail to come to the table, no change will occur.
Those who fail to recongnize injustices will never commit to rectifying them. We can think of all the reforms we want and the community is desperately reaching out to police departments. Sadly, our cries fall on deaf ears. So many people think that all of us want to abolish the police. We want fair policing and it will take more than training.
Historically, the police have always been disproportionately been used to oppress Black people. The first United States officers were slave catchers. Until we can reckon with the racist undertones of modern policing, attempts to confront reforms will always be stymied. Thanks for reading and your feedback.
